India Notifies Sixth Positive Indigenisation List of 405 Defence Items

The Defence Ministry has set phased timelines to end imports and shift purchases to qualified Indian suppliers to boost domestic defence manufacturing.

Overview

  • The Department of Defence Production formally notified the sixth Positive Indigenisation List on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, adding 405 items with an estimated business potential of ₹3,070 crore.
  • The items are line‑replaceable units, sub‑systems, spares, components and raw materials used on aircraft, helicopters, T‑72/T‑90 tanks, BMP‑II, warships, missile systems and defence electronics.
  • Each item carries an indicative indigenisation deadline from December 2026 to December 2029, after which imports will be phased out and procurement will be redirected to Indian industry once domestic qualification is complete.
  • Implementation routes include DPSU in‑house development, the formal ‘Make’ procedure and offers through the SRIJAN Defence Portal, with a particular push to involve MSMEs, start‑ups and firms such as HAL, BEL and BDL.
  • The move builds on prior lists and SRIJAN portal data showing more than 15,700 items indigenised and roughly ₹9,000 crore in import substitution to March–June 2026, but practical challenges remain in meeting defence specs, scaling MSME capacity and meeting tight timelines.
