Independiente Secures Matías Abaldo on Season-Long Loan

Independiente’s deal highlights a focus on player welfare through Abaldo’s return from a medically sanctioned mental health break.

Overview

  • Independiente acquired Abaldo on a one-year loan from Defensor Sporting for $130,000 and obtained an option to purchase 80% of his rights for $2.5 million, with a clause allowing a six-month extension.
  • The transfer is pending a medical examination before Abaldo joins Julio Vaccari’s 4-3-3 formation ahead of matches against River Plate and Universidad de Chile in the Sudamericana round of 16.
  • Abaldo was part of Uruguay’s 2023 U20 World Cup–winning squad and recorded five goals and four assists in 36 appearances for Gimnasia La Plata.
  • Gimnasia La Plata granted him an indefinite leave in January for serious mental health treatment in Montevideo, where he has since undergone psychiatric care and reported significant improvement.
  • Independiente has managed just three goals in four league matches, prompting the club to reinforce its attack with the young Uruguay international.
