Independent SA MP Nick McBride Remanded on Aggravated Assault and Bail Breach Charges

A home detention report will inform a January 6 court return after the magistrate kept the MacKillop MP in custody.

Overview

  • Police say they were called to a Conmurra home on Saturday morning, where the 56-year-old MP was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, breach of bail and breaching an intervention order.
  • The court applied the presumption against bail under 2024 changes to the Bail Act, ordered a home detention report and listed the case to return on January 6.
  • McBride appeared via video link from Mount Gambier to the Adelaide Magistrates Court as his lawyers said the allegations would be vigorously defended.
  • An 82-year-old man from Kingston South was also reported for aggravated assault and will be summonsed to court at a later date, according to police.
  • The MP is already facing six separate domestic-violence-related charges dating back to last year, he has previously signalled he will not resign or withdraw from the March election, and political leaders have called the allegations serious.
