Independence Hall Closes to Visitors Until Jan. 28, 2026 for Interior Preservation Ahead of U.S. 250th

The National Park Service says a full shutdown will speed interior preservation to hasten the return of public tours.

Overview

  • Visitors will not be admitted through Jan. 28, 2026 as crews complete interior work timed to Philadelphia’s semiquincentennial programming.
  • The agency says the total closure is intended to finish the project faster and restart guided access sooner.
  • The Independence Square Improvement Project, launched in March 2025, adds accessible ramps and restores wood, masonry, plaster and metal with historically accurate paint.
  • Work on Congress Hall and Old City Hall has concluded, and the Liberty Bell Center reopened after the federal shutdown even as Independence Hall remained closed.
  • Independence National Historical Park is providing alternative experiences and directing the public to the site’s webpage for updates; the building holds original printed copies of the Declaration, Constitution and Articles of Confederation.
