INDEC Says Argentina’s Poverty Fell to 31.6% in the First Half of 2025

Academic centers and unions warn the decline may be overstated because of improved income capture and outdated consumption weights in the poverty baskets.

Overview

  • The poverty rate fell 6.5 points from late 2024 and 21.3 points from early 2024, with extreme poverty at 6.9%, the lowest levels since 2018.
  • INDEC reports 2,456,090 households and 9,451,018 people below the poverty line in the 31 urban agglomerates, including 2,051,984 in extreme poverty.
  • Disinflation and a slower rise in the basic baskets relative to incomes supported the improvement, yet the poverty gap remained wide at 37%.
  • Inequality persists across regions: the Northeast recorded 39% poverty versus 27% in Patagonia, and 45.4% of children under 14 live in poor households.
  • President Javier Milei and his spokesman celebrated the data, as UCA, CEPA and IPyPP urged updating the ENGHo‑based baskets and clearer disclosure of methodological changes.
