Inclusion List Reveals Majority of Most Inclusive TV Shows Have Ended or Face Uncertain Future
Despite efforts to increase diversity, many top-ranking inclusive series have been canceled or are awaiting renewal decisions.
- The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in partnership with the Adobe Foundation, released The Inclusion List, a data-driven ranking system that honors the most inclusive series across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms.
- The list ranks series based on 15 inclusion indicators, including gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age representation for series regular cast, and gender and race/ethnicity for behind-the-scenes roles.
- Despite the recognition of these inclusive shows, a troubling trend emerges: a majority of the most inclusive shows have already ended, been canceled, or are still in renewal limbo.
- The top scorers for broadcast and cable series included shows “Queen Sugar” and “The Baby”, while streaming platform top performers included “Raising Dion” and “Gentified”.
- The list also includes the top 20 producers of the most inclusive shows on TV, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, and Ava DuVernay among the highest scorers.
