INCA Flags 73,600 Breast Cancer Cases for 2025 as Rio Records Second-Highest Mortality

Organized screening is the priority to improve access and shorten treatment waits within Brazil’s public health system.

Overview

  • INCA’s new report released on October 3 estimates 73,610 new breast cancer cases in 2025 and notes more than 20,000 deaths in 2023.
  • The Southeast shows the highest incidence, Santa Catarina leads among states, and mortality rates are highest in Roraima with Rio de Janeiro second and Rio Grande do Sul also elevated.
  • Rio de Janeiro also has the country’s second-highest incidence rate, with officials citing the need to expand mammography access and outreach.
  • Screening coverage remains low and uneven across Brazil, ranging from roughly 5% in some northern states to about 33% in Espírito Santo, as INCA urges a move toward 70% coverage.
  • INCA reports improved time from diagnosis to first treatment over the past three years, with the South leading on care within 60 days, while federal programs and Outubro Rosa campaigns aim to cut queues, add therapies in SUS and bring services closer through mobile units and local events.
