INBAL Confirms Death of Soprano Lourdes Ambriz, Belle’s Spanish Singing Voice

The Mexican opera star built a four-decade career capped by top national honors.

Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature said she died on August 28 and offered condolences to her family and colleagues.
Ambriz sang Belle’s songs in the 1991 Latin American Spanish version of Beauty and the Beast, while Diana Santos voiced the character’s dialogue.
Some outlets report she died after a battle with cancer at a Mexico City hospital, and her age is reported as either 64 or 67.
She debuted in 1982 with Mexico’s National Opera Company and later performed with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Dallas and San Francisco symphonies, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Symphony, and the German Chamber Academy.
Her leadership roles included Artistic Deputy Director of the National Opera Company and Artistic Director of the Ópera de Bellas Artes, and her honors include the National Youth Award, the Mozart Medal, the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Medal, and the Bellas Artes Medal.
