Overview
- After talks in the Secretaría de Gobernación on Oct. 8–9 failed, active and retired IMSS staff set up a plantón on Paseo de la Reforma and staged blockades and demonstrations in dozens of points across many states.
- The IMSS says hospitals and emergency services remain operational and that more than 400,000 workers registered attendance during the recent protests.
- Union leadership and IMSS formalized a packaged 6.8% increase made up of a 2.9% tabular raise plus 3.9% in benefits and moved the proposal to a worker consultation on Oct. 14 under federal oversight.
- Dissident rank-and-file reject the 6.8% figure as illegitimate, demand a 10% salary raise and the removal of SNTSS leader Rafael Olivos Hernández, and have called a national march for Oct. 14 backed by other unions and collectives.
- Calls to restore the previous pension regime or eliminate AFORES would require changes in law, which limits what IMSS management can deliver quickly and makes the Oct. 14 events a likely turning point for the conflict.
