IMSS to Build 19 Childcare Centers in Michoacán as Morelia Sites Are Identified

The initiative marks IMSS’s return to running childcare directly, emphasizing biometrics plus specialist-led early education.

Overview

  • Authorities announced 19 CECIs across 16 municipalities, with state and municipal governments providing land through Sedum and DIF coordination.
  • The former Morelia Cereso will be repurposed for a CECI of roughly 2,500 square meters that uses only part of the four-hectare property, with the remainder slated for other federal projects.
  • Villas del Pedregal in west Morelia is slated for a CECI and a regional IMSS hospital planned for 2026 with 260 beds, 50 specialties, 12 operating rooms and 50 consultorios.
  • Site evaluations are underway statewide, with site walks in Villas del Pedregal set to start in the coming days and a goal to finalize the 19 plots by late September.
  • Capacity is projected to rise from about 7,400 children currently served to more than 11,200 in direct IMSS centers, with total coverage expected to reach roughly 47,000 children ages 0 to 4.
