IMSS Replaces NPIE With SAT e.firma and Opens 90-Day Migration Window

This alignment with federal systems requires employers to link company and representative e.firmas in the IMSS Escritorio Virtual to retain digital access.

Overview

  • The IMSS Council's agreement was published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación and the 90-day transition began on July 17, 2026, allowing NPIE and e.firma to coexist while systems are updated.
  • When the transition ends in mid-October 2026 the NPIE will be invalid and all employer electronic procedures will require the SAT-issued e.firma, which IMSS says has the same legal effect as a handwritten signature.
  • Companies that are legal entities must link the company's e.firma and the personal e.firma of their legal representative in the Escritorio Virtual so the portal can authenticate transactions using both certificates.
  • IMSS has tasked its Dirección de Innovación y Desarrollo Tecnológico and the Unidad de Incorporación to implement technical changes and provide online guidance, and the migration is carried out entirely through the Escritorio Virtual with no in-person visits needed.
  • The switch aims to cut duplicate credentials and strengthen identity checks across federal systems but risks portal congestion or blocked access if employers delay renewing expired e.firmas or fail to complete the linking process before the deadline.
