IMSA’s VIR Round Goes GT-Only as Porsche Entries Are Confirmed

A GT-only field opens a clear path to an overall for Porsche customer teams.

Overview

  • The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR starts Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:00 p.m. ET, runs 2 hours 40 minutes, features 23 GT cars (10 GTD Pro, 13 GTD), and airs on USA Network with streaming on Peacock and imsa.tv plus live timing at scoring.imsa.com.
  • AO Racing’s Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler compete in GTD Pro in a 911 GT3 R, sit third in the standings by 97 points, and return with the “Rexy” livery.
  • Wright Motorsports fields Adam Adelson and Elliott Skeer in GTD, with Adelson also scheduled for a VP Racing SportsCar Challenge tripleheader and a Canadian Tire Motorsport Park make-up sprint for four races across the weekend.
  • Porsche Motorsport North America’s Volker Holzmeyer describes VIR as a favorite and says the GT-only format gives customer teams a clear run at the overall.
  • Prototypes are sidelined until Indianapolis in September, as Porsche points to 11 IMSA wins at VIR and a 3.27-mile layout that suits the 911 GT3 R.
