Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati Road Reopens Under Security Convoys

The restart is intended to restore routine travel, cut costly air fares, and support rehabilitation of displaced people

Overview

  • Passenger services along NH‑2 resumed on Friday, August 21, and have run for several consecutive days as escorted convoys carrying roughly 900 people so far according to state officials.
  • Authorities are running the route with heavy security and Road Opening Parties to protect vulnerable stretches and to allow buses, Winger vans and smaller vehicles to travel between Imphal, Dimapur and Guwahati.
  • A localized flare-up at Taphou village that included a gunfight, arson and an injured CRPF jawan briefly delayed departures on August 24 but local MLAs and district officials persuaded communities to allow passage and the convoys continued.
  • Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh pushed the reopening after outreach to hill districts, has met IDP representatives to pledge rehabilitation and says restored road access will help resettlement and services for the displaced.
  • The restart offers immediate relief for students, patients and families who faced steep air fares, but officials warn the progress is fragile and that sustained security, local dialogue and concrete resettlement plans are needed next.
