Overview
- Lawmakers submitted impeachment notices signed by 145 Lok Sabha MPs to Speaker Om Birla and by 63 Rajya Sabha MPs to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, meeting the constitutional requirements.
- The motions invoke Articles 124, 217 and 218 of the Constitution, which require initial support from at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha members before a two-thirds majority vote.
- Parliament must now appoint a three-member inquiry committee under the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968 to examine the allegations and report back within three months.
- The impeachment bids follow a Supreme Court in-house panel’s report that found prima facie evidence of misconduct after piles of burnt cash were discovered at Justice Varma’s Delhi residence in March.
- Justice Varma has challenged the in-house panel’s findings in the Supreme Court, arguing procedural flaws and claiming he was denied a fair opportunity to respond.
