Immigration Officers Arrest Ten Workers at Evri Depots

The arrests form part of a stepped-up Home Office crackdown that raises the risk of new employer liability when wider right-to-work checks take effect in October.

Overview

  • Immigration Enforcement carried out three depot visits on July 8, July 9 and July 15 that led to ten arrests at Evri sites in Redditch, Croydon and Crawley.
  • Those detained include nationals from Pakistan, Brazil, India, Gambia and Ghana and several were arrested for overstaying visas.
  • All ten people have been placed on immigration bail while the Home Office says it will pursue removals as soon as possible and continues its inquiries.
  • Evri says it carries out right-to-work checks for employees and will cooperate with investigators, but liability may turn on whether workers were supplied through subcontractors.
  • The raids sit against a surge in enforcement last year and the introduction in October of a legal duty to check gig and zero-hours workers, which could expose delivery firms to fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker.
