Immersion Tragedies in Madhya Pradesh Leave At Least 10 Dead in Khandwa, Searches Ongoing in Ujjain

Officials prioritized rescue operations with compensation announced for bereaved families.

Overview

  • Authorities recovered 10–11 bodies, many of them girls, after a tractor-trolley carrying Durga idols and devotees overturned into a pond in Khandwa’s Pandhana area, with SDRF and local divers continuing searches.
  • Police and officials said the Khandwa vehicle was overcrowded with roughly 20–30 people, and it tilted off a culvert into deep water during Vijayadashami immersion rituals.
  • In a separate Ujjain incident, a tractor-trolley plunged into the Chambal River after a child reportedly started the tractor, leaving two children dead and at least one person missing as rescue efforts continue.
  • Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced ₹4 lakh ex-gratia for the next of kin of those killed and directed hospitals to provide treatment for the injured.
  • The festival-linked disasters coincided with other deadly crashes: six people died when an SUV hit a parked truck in Muzaffarnagar, one pilgrim was killed and about 30 injured in a Panchkula pickup overturning with the driver booked, and fatal collisions were reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur and Bihar’s Kaimur.
