Imgur Blocks UK Access After ICO Signals Possible Fine

The regulator is probing Imgur's handling of children's data following a September 10 notice of intent to fine parent MediaLab.

Overview

  • As of September 30, users in the United Kingdom see a “Content not available in your region” error when attempting to access Imgur.
  • Imgur’s help page says UK users cannot log in, view or upload content, and embedded Imgur images will not display for UK audiences.
  • The company directs UK users to request copies of their data or delete their accounts in line with UK data protection rights.
  • The ICO opened its investigation in March into children’s data practices and age verification, reached provisional findings, and issued its notice of intent to MediaLab on September 10.
  • The ICO says restricting UK access is a commercial decision, warns that leaving the market does not erase potential past infringements, and notes any final penalty will follow MediaLab’s representations.
