IMF Taps Nigel Chalk to Lead Western Hemisphere Department From Oct. 27

The longtime deputy’s elevation signals continuity, with the Fund stepping up engagement with Argentina.

Overview

  • Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva announced Nigel Chalk’s appointment to head the IMF’s Western Hemisphere Department, which oversees relations with the Americas including Argentina.
  • Chalk will take office on October 27, succeeding Rodrigo Valdés, who shifts that same day to lead the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department.
  • Since 2014, Chalk has served as deputy director in the department, overseeing surveillance and lending for key economies such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico and Suriname.
  • The change follows a period in which Valdés withdrew from talks with Argentina after tensions with President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo, with Luis Cubeddu guiding negotiations to a $20 billion agreement in April.
  • The announcement comes as the IMF voices support for Argentina’s program, with Georgieva recently speaking with Caputo on implementation and communications chief Julie Kozack noting staff were informed about Treasury foreign-exchange interventions.
