Imelda Buffets Bermuda, Pulls Away as Humberto Dissipates

A rare Fujiwhara interaction between the two hurricanes helped keep Imelda offshore of the U.S. coast.

Overview

  • Imelda’s core passed over or very near Bermuda late Wednesday with sustained winds near 100 mph, then weakened to Category 1 as it moved east-northeast early Thursday.
  • Authorities closed schools, the airport and government offices, deployed 100 soldiers, and reported scattered power outages as 2–4 inches of rain, storm surge and large waves threatened flash flooding.
  • Humberto dissipated after merging with a frontal boundary, with its remnants named Storm Amy and forecast by U.K. officials to affect Ireland and the U.K. starting Friday.
  • Swells from both systems are producing life-threatening surf, rip currents and coastal flooding from the Bahamas and Bermuda to much of the U.S. East Coast, with several Outer Banks homes collapsing.
  • Imelda earlier caused deadly flooding in eastern Cuba and flooding in parts of Haiti as the storms’ unusual proximity steered Imelda away from a U.S. landfall.
