Imelda Becomes a Hurricane, Bermuda Under Warning as Humberto Weakens Offshore

Humberto’s broad circulation is steering Imelda away from the U.S. toward Bermuda.

Overview

  • The National Hurricane Center said Imelda strengthened to a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph and is forecast to gain intensity as it nears Bermuda late Wednesday into Thursday.
  • A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda, where forecasters expect damaging winds, large waves and heavy rain that could trigger flash flooding.
  • Humberto remains near hurricane strength close to Bermuda but is weakening and is expected to transition to a strong extratropical system on Wednesday after passing west and then north of the island.
  • Swells from Imelda and Humberto are producing life-threatening rip currents and dangerous surf along much of the U.S. East Coast this week, with pockets of coastal flooding possible from Florida into the Carolinas.
  • Imelda previously caused deadly flooding and landslides in eastern Cuba, with two fatalities reported, and brought flooding to parts of the Bahamas where schools remained closed and officials warned that floodwaters persist.
