IMD Warns of Heavy Snow and Rain Across Western Himalayas Jan. 22–26

The alerts follow a severe January rain shortfall that has strained water supplies across Himachal Pradesh.

Overview

  • The Shimla Meteorological Centre issued an orange alert for Kullu, Chamba, and Lahaul-Spiti on Jan. 23, with yellow alerts for most other Himachal districts.
  • IMD expects the wet spell to peak on Jan. 23 with thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 30–50 kmph across parts of the western Himalayas and adjoining plains.
  • Daytime temperatures are forecast to fall by about 6–8°C on Jan. 23, with cold‑day alerts for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Mandi.
  • Fairly widespread rain and snowfall are likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand through Jan. 26, with scattered rain over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
  • Authorities warned of possible air and road disruptions during Jan. 22–23 and advised fishermen to avoid parts of the northwest Arabian Sea from Jan. 22–24.
