IMD Warns Of Heavy Rains In South India Through Oct. 17 As Kerala Issues Alerts

Cyclonic remnants tied to Shakhti are fueling the wet spell during the southwest monsoon’s retreat.

Overview

  • The IMD projects light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from October 12 to 17, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph.
  • District-level warnings are in place in Kerala, including orange alerts for Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod and a yellow alert on October 12 for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad.
  • Bengaluru saw overnight flooding and traffic disruption, with 67–68 mm recorded at the city observatory and about 21–22 mm at the airports, and officials reporting no major injuries as municipal teams worked to clear treefalls.
  • The weather agency attributes the activity to the remnants of Cyclone Shakhti and other cyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
  • Fishermen have been asked to avoid the west-central Arabian Sea and nearby waters off Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep on October 12–13, as the IMD also signals further southwest monsoon withdrawal from central and eastern India within 2–3 days.
