Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department has placed Mumbai, its suburbs and 10 coastal Andhra districts under red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall and warned the Bay of Bengal low is likely to deepen into a depression by Aug 19.
  • Mumbai endured its third consecutive day of intense downpours on Aug 18, with widespread waterlogging inundating roads and underpasses, forcing afternoon school closures and causing local trains to run 8–20 minutes late.
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport recorded nine flight go-arounds and one diversion to Surat, prompting IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India to advise passengers to allow extra travel time.
  • Heavy rains in Khammam, Telangana, caused the Munneru river and local tanks to overflow, cutting off villages and leading officials to release 10,000 cusecs from the Kinnerasani reservoir and set up relief centres.
  • In Marathwada’s Nanded district, five people have been reported missing in Mukhed tehsil as NDRF, Army and police teams coordinate search-and-rescue operations for more than 200 stranded residents.
