IMD Warns of Cold-Wave Pockets as Kolkata Hits Season Low and Delhi Edges Warmer

A western disturbance is set to nudge up northern night temperatures with stronger winds that could briefly ease Delhi's pollution.

  • The India Meteorological Department issued targeted cold-wave alerts for isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana (Dec 7, 10–11), West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha (Dec 7–8), East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh (Dec 7), and Jharkhand and Odisha (Dec 7).
  • Kolkata logged its coldest morning of the season at 14.5°C, 2.1°C below normal, with IMD forecasting dry weather across West Bengal through the next week.
  • In Kashmir, night temperatures stayed well below freezing, including −4.1°C in Srinagar and −6.4°C in Shopian, with generally cloudy but mostly dry conditions expected in the near term.
  • Delhi’s minimum rose to 6.8°C on Saturday after 5.6°C on Friday, with the IMD projecting 8–10°C on Sunday and Monday and winds near 15–20 km/h, while AQI remained in the very poor range around 334–335.
  • Central India remained particularly chilly, with reports of new lows in Madhya Pradesh and forecasters indicating further intensification of cold around Dec 7–8, alongside local fog advisories and isolated light rain chances in some districts.
