IMD Warns of Cold and Dense Fog in Bengal and Odisha With South Bengal Set to Warm Slightly

The IMD warns of dense morning fog that could disrupt travel across parts of West Bengal and Odisha.

Overview

  • Recent readings put Darjeeling near 4°C and Bankura at 9°C in the plains as the IMD expects cold conditions to persist in north Bengal for about a week.
  • Minimum temperatures in south Bengal are forecast to rise by 2–3°C after two days before stabilising into early January.
  • Dense to very dense morning fog is forecast in pockets of West Bengal through around January 3, with visibility in places dropping to 50–199 metres and possible transport disruption.
  • Odisha remains under a cold wave with at least 13 locations below 10°C, including G Udaygiri at 3.6°C and Phulbani at 5.5°C, alongside yellow fog warnings for several districts on specific mornings.
  • Light rain or snowfall is likely at one or two higher reaches of Darjeeling in the coming days, while otherwise dry weather is expected across West Bengal for the next week.
