IMD Tracks Twin Bay Systems Driving Urban Downpours, Depression Likely by Sept 26–27

IMD expects two Bay of Bengal systems to drive a wet week with rough seas, prompting heightened alerts and preparedness.

Overview

  • IMD confirms a low-pressure area formed over the northeast Bay on Monday and forecasts another around September 25 that could intensify into a depression off the South Odisha–North Andhra coast by September 26 and cross around September 27.
  • West Bengal’s Alipore Met Office issued yellow to orange alerts for South Bengal through September 26 with heavy to very heavy rain in select districts and advised fishermen to stay off the coast due to squally winds up to 55 kmph.
  • Mumbai and parts of Konkan are under a yellow alert, with intermittent heavy showers causing waterlogging, rail delays and a dozen civic incidents but no casualties reported, as city reservoirs reach roughly 99% storage.
  • Hyderabad saw intense evening downpours on Sunday and Monday with 80–100 mm readings at several sites, waterlogging on key roads and GHMC and HYDRAA teams deployed for pumping and traffic management.
  • Maharashtra authorities reported people stranded in flood-hit Dharashiv’s Sakat village, with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar directing evacuations and calling for NDRF deployment and possible helicopter support.
