IMD: South Peninsula’s Northeast Monsoon Near Normal, Kerala Faces Shortfall

A shortage of Bay of Bengal systems drove the late-season fade.

Overview

  • The southern peninsula logged 283.4 mm of northeast monsoon rain, a 3.7% departure that IMD classifies as near normal.
  • Tamil Nadu and Puducherry received 42.8 cm against a normal 44.2 cm, a roughly 3% shortfall that still falls within the normal range.
  • Kerala recorded the largest seasonal deficiency at about 21%, while most other states and union territories were in the normal category.
  • An October surge linked to Cyclone Montha lifted early totals, but November fell 43% below average and December was 35.9% lower through December 30.
  • IMD attributes the subdued finish to a lack of Bay of Bengal systems and has not formally withdrawn the monsoon, as officials report reservoir storage remains comfortable.
