IMD Sees Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal by Thursday as Northeast Monsoon Begins

The transition ushers in the season that supplies roughly half of Tamil Nadu’s yearly rainfall.

Overview

  • The Indian Meteorological Department says conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw from the entire country by October 16.
  • The northeast monsoon is expected to set in around the same time over parts of southern India.
  • Heavy rain is forecast for several districts in Tamil Nadu over the next four days.
  • Fishermen have been advised to avoid the southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala coasts because of gusty winds.
  • An upper-air cyclonic circulation moving toward Kanyakumari is expected to help generate a low-pressure area near the Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep around October 19.
