IMD Says Bay of Bengal System Likely to Become Cyclone ‘Senyar’ Within 48 Hours

Forecast confidence remains low due to interacting lows over the Andaman Sea and the Comorin region.

Overview

  • The well‑marked low near the Strait of Malacca is moving west‑northwest and is expected to become a depression over the south Andaman Sea within 24 hours before strengthening into a cyclonic storm.
  • IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe, with additional warnings for Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on specified dates through November 30.
  • Districts across Tamil Nadu and the PuducherryKaraikal region have closed schools and, in some cases, colleges due to widespread rain, waterlogging and the risk of localized flash floods.
  • Fishermen have been advised to avoid the Andaman Sea, the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal and nearby waters because of strong winds and rough seas.
  • The exact track, landfall point and peak intensity remain uncertain, with models variously suggesting a path toward the Tamil Nadu–Andhra coast, the Andhra–Odisha coast or a northward recurvature.
