Overview

  • Traffic was suspended on the Jammu–Srinagar highway due to landslides and shooting stones, bridges were damaged, and rivers including Tawi, Chenab, Ravi, Basantar and Ujh rose to warning or danger levels, with police and disaster teams rescuing four people in Kathua.
  • Himachal Pradesh reported extensive damage with about 795 roads closed, two national highways shut, and hundreds of power transformers and water schemes disrupted, as a red alert covered Chamba, Kangra and Mandi.
  • Delhi-NCR saw fresh spells of rain with the Yamuna near the 205-metre danger mark, and airlines such as Air India, SpiceJet and IndiGo cautioned passengers about possible delays as waterlogging slowed traffic.
  • School closures were ordered across the Jammu division and in multiple districts of Himachal, Punjab and Rajasthan as authorities cited risks from heavy rain, flash floods and landslides.
  • The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rain across parts of northwest India through August 26 with a gradual reduction later in the week, while warning of flash-flood potential and travel disruption in vulnerable hill districts.
