IMD Raises Mumbai to Orange Alert as Heavy Rains Flood City and Snarl Traffic

A Vidarbha cyclonic circulation is driving a Konkan rainfall surge with nowcasts for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Overview

  • The IMD placed Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg on orange alert, with yellow alerts for Palghar, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nashik.
  • Downpours caused severe waterlogging in Kurla, BKC, Juhu and Andheri, and the Andheri Subway was shut after about two to two-and-a-half feet of water forced traffic diversions via Gokhale Bridge.
  • Forecasters warned of heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms and isolated gusts of 30–40 kmph, and issued a nowcast for parts of Mumbai and nearby districts.
  • Authorities advised fishermen along the Konkan coast to stay ashore due to rough seas and urged civic agencies to prepare for flooding, waterlogging and landslides.
  • One woman died in a wall collapse in Sakinaka during the rain, while IMD data showed isolated extremely heavy 24-hour totals in Coastal Karnataka and Telangana and fresh warnings for parts of Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Kerala and Coastal Karnataka.
