IMD Puts Gujarat and Rajasthan on Red Alert as Rains Intensify, Mumbai Shifts to Yellow

Forecasters say a strengthening low-pressure system will drive the peak of this spell over Gujarat through September 6–7 before easing next week.

Overview

  • IMD’s latest bulletin places Gujarat and Rajasthan under a red alert for Saturday, with extremely heavy rain likely over the Gujarat region, Saurashtra and Kutch on September 6–7 as the low-pressure system strengthens and could form a depression by Sunday.
  • Mumbai’s warning was upgraded to orange on Friday evening until 8:30 am Saturday, then downgraded to a yellow alert for the city, while Palghar remains on orange through Sunday morning with isolated very heavy spells possible late Saturday night into early Sunday.
  • Authorities reported widespread downpours across Gujarat this week, with 195 talukas recording rain and 82 dams overflowing, as the state reached 92.64% of average seasonal rainfall and more very heavy rain is forecast in several districts.
  • Rainfall intensity in the Mumbai region is expected to gradually decline from September 7, with forecasts pointing to moderate showers Sunday–Monday and light rain with no alerts around September 9–10.
  • IMD projects heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of West, Northwest and Central India through September 11, including Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan and the Konkan-Goa belt, with the most intense activity focused this weekend in Gujarat and adjoining areas.
