Overview

  • IMD projects above-normal cumulative rainfall at 106% of the long-period average for August–September, with August near normal and September above normal.
  • Certain areas of northeast and adjoining eastern India, isolated pockets of central India and the southwest peninsular region may receive below-normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon.
  • The Block-Wise Rainfall Monitoring Scheme has launched real-time data collection across 7,200 administrative blocks to enhance agricultural planning, water resource management and disaster response.
  • India’s 161 major reservoirs held 69% of total capacity as of July 31, exceeding last year’s levels, although storage in the Brahmaputra basin remains below normal due to persistent northeastern deficits.
  • ENSO-neutral conditions are expected to persist through October with the Indian Ocean Dipole shifting toward weak negative, while August daytime temperatures are forecast to be normal to below normal and nighttime temperatures normal to above normal.
