IMD Orange Alert as Western Disturbance Brings Kashmir’s First Snow, Triggers Closures

  • An active western disturbance from October 5–7 produced early‑season snowfall at Gulmarg’s Kongdori, Afarwat, Sonamarg, Sinthan Top, Peer Ki Gali and Rajdan Top, with 4–10 inches forecast at mountain passes.
  • Plains across Jammu and Kashmir recorded moderate to heavy rain as the IMD warned of landslides and rockfalls on the JammuSrinagar and SrinagarLeh highways and urged caution for residents and tourists.
  • The Jammu administration closed all government and private schools on October 6–7 and suspended the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage until at least October 8 due to the heavy rain warning.
  • Orange alerts extended beyond Jammu and Kashmir, with rain and hail warnings for Delhi‑NCR and snow and rain alerts for parts of Himachal Pradesh including Lahaul‑Spiti, Kullu and Chamba.
  • Flood conditions were reported in Bihar with hundreds of villages inundated as the Koshi, Bagmati and Kamla Balan rivers swelled, while the IMD also highlighted a tropical‑cyclone‑scale threat in the northern Indian Ocean.
