IMD Issues Red Alerts in Western Assam With Very Heavy Rain Forecast for Arunachal

Officials warn of flash-flood risk and power disruptions as gusty thunderstorms persist through October 10.

Overview

  • Kokrajhar and Chirang are under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall of 21 cm or more, with impact-based warnings issued for western Assam and Guwahati.
  • Arunachal Pradesh is forecast to see very heavy rain in Tawang (12–20 cm) and heavy rain in West Kameng (6–11 cm), with widespread activity from Monday.
  • Intermittent downpours have already triggered flooding at Guwahati’s Jorabat junction, while stations such as Gossaigaon and Chouldhowaghat recorded 6 cm in 24 hours.
  • Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 40–50 km/h are expected, raising risks of waterlogging, landslides, poor visibility, and temporary outages including ferry and communication services.
  • The IMD outlook flags isolated heavy spells across Northeast states through Oct 10–11, and advisories urge residents to follow SDMA guidance while farmers postpone sowing and use mulching to reduce soil loss.
