IMD Issues Red Alerts as Hathnikund Peaks at 3.5 Lakh Cusecs — Delhi on Flood Watch

Forecasters cite a monsoon–western disturbance interaction that will keep rain unusually intense into early September.

Overview

  • The IMD placed parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on red alert, warning of extremely heavy rain, flash floods and landslides over the next three days.
  • Discharge at the Hathnikund barrage hit roughly 3.5 lakh cusecs this morning, triggering high-flood alerts for Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, with flows expected to reach the Capital in 48–72 hours.
  • Delhi issued a flood alert as the Yamuna nears the danger mark, with a Central Water Commission advisory expected and round-the-clock patrolling, evacuations and relief camps ordered for low-lying areas.
  • Himachal Pradesh reported over 300 deaths this monsoon, with 819 roads—including three national highways—1,236 power transformers and 424 water supply schemes disrupted, and fresh red alerts forcing school closures.
  • Officials say northwest India logged its wettest August since 2001 and forecast above-normal rainfall in September, keeping NDRF, SDRF and other agencies on heightened readiness in hill and downstream districts.
