IMD Issues Red Alerts as Deep Depression Triggers Flash-Flood Risk in Gujarat and Rajasthan

Forecasters expect the system to weaken as it shifts toward southeast Pakistan following isolated extremely heavy rain.

Overview

  • The IMD warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, with isolated totals above 20–21 cm, over Saurashtra, Kutch and parts of north Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan, with high flash-flood risk in districts including Banaskantha, Patan, Barmer, Jalore and Sirohi.
  • The system that intensified over north Gujarat and adjoining southwest Rajasthan was centred near southeast Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan and Kutch on Monday, is tracking northwest, and is likely to drift west and weaken thereafter.
  • Broader advisories cover multiple states this week, with heavy rain alerts for Sikkim and sub-Himalayan West Bengal, thunderstorms in Andhra Pradesh, and marine warnings including fishing and ferry restrictions across parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Andamans.
  • Local forecasts show mixed conditions: Mumbai has no active alerts with only light to moderate showers, Delhi is set for light rain on Tuesday without warnings, and Bengaluru is under a yellow advisory for scattered rain and thunderstorms.
  • Severe monsoon impacts persist in the north, with officials reporting at least 46 deaths in flood-hit Punjab and Himachal Pradesh’s disaster authority citing 366 seasonal deaths alongside widespread road, power and water disruptions, while the UK Met Office is monitoring a low that could become named Storm Amy later this week.
