IMD Issues Orange Fog Alerts Across North India as Himalayan Snow, Rain Forecast for Weekend

Authorities flag persistent night and morning fog that could curb visibility and heighten cold stress across several states.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department issued orange alerts for dense to very dense fog across Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, with an orange alert for persistent cold-day conditions in Bihar.
  • Dense to very dense fog is expected during night and morning hours over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh through December 29, with similar conditions in Uttarakhand until December 28 and parts of Madhya Pradesh through December 25.
  • Rain and snowfall are forecast between December 27 and 29 in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit Baltistan and Muzaffarabad, with Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand likely to see precipitation on December 28–29 and snowfall possible in some areas.
  • Delhi was blanketed by fog that disrupted travel and worsened pollution, with CPCB data showing an overall air quality index of 336 in the very poor category.
  • Himachal Pradesh’s Met office issued an orange warning for dense to very dense fog around the Bhakra dam area in Bilaspur until December 28, posted yellow fog alerts for several other districts, and predicted isolated light rain or snow on December 28 and 30.
