IMD Issues Orange Alerts for Three Kerala Districts as Heavy Rain Hits

The agency warned very heavy rain bands, gusty winds, thunderstorms, local flooding risk, with rainfall expected to taper over the next few days.

Overview

  • The India Meteorological Department placed Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki under an orange alert and issued yellow alerts for six other districts to flag high rainfall risk.
  • An orange alert signals very heavy rain of 11–20 cm and a yellow alert signals heavy rain of 6–11 cm, thresholds used to guide local preparations.
  • The IMD forecast thunderstorms, moderate to heavy showers and gusty winds reaching about 40 km per hour in several parts of the state.
  • Showers gave short-term relief from weeks of rising temperatures, but lightning struck in Thiruvananthapuram district, killing one person and injuring others during the downpour.
  • The IMD said rainfall is likely to decrease over the next couple of days, limiting the event’s duration but urging authorities and residents to prepare for local flooding and wind damage.
