Overview
- The India Meteorological Department issued an Orange Alert for Delhi on Monday, forecasting moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h with gusts up to about 60 km/h and daytime highs near 32°C.
- The IMD says the wet spell will persist through about July 11 with rainfall activity increasing from July 7 and isolated very heavy showers likely between July 6 and July 9 and again on July 11.
- Bad weather has already affected travel: Indira Gandhi International Airport reported 15 Delhi‑bound flights diverted on Saturday and airlines have urged passengers to check flight status before travelling.
- Local downpours have caused waterlogging in parts of the capital, with Chhatarpur recording 49 mm and Gurugram 35 mm, and authorities are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during severe conditions.
- Forecasters link the pattern to the recent monsoon arrival in Delhi, which came about five days late, and to a shift in the monsoon trough and low‑pressure activity that could increase rain across the wider Delhi‑NCR and neighbouring states.
