IMD Issues New Red Alerts as Late Monsoon Pounds Rajasthan While Flood Threat Persists in Punjab and Delhi

IMD warnings are driving evacuations, rescues, precautionary shutdowns across flood‑hit states.

Overview

  • The IMD has placed parts of Rajasthan under a red alert for September 8, warning of very heavy rainfall with localized totals of 20–30 cm in districts including Jaisalmer, Jalore, Sirohi, Pali and Jodhpur.
  • Delhi-NCR faces continued flood risk with the Yamuna above danger marks, as authorities operate relief camps; light to moderate rain is likely on September 8 with a possible lull on September 9–10.
  • Punjab remains severely inundated with about 1,900–1,948 villages affected, more than 3.8 lakh people impacted and at least 43 deaths reported, while reduced rainfall is expected to offer short-term relief and NDRF and Army teams sustain rescue and aid operations.
  • Fresh cloudbursts and landslides have hit the hills, including a cloudburst near Uttarkashi’s Naugaon and slides across Himachal and Ladakh that shut the Srinagar–Leh highway, with ongoing travel advisories and intermittent school closures in vulnerable districts.
  • Heavy-rain alerts extend to parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, and flooding continues in Gujarat where rivers such as the Sabarmati are in spate and urban neighborhoods near Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar report waterlogging and rescues.
