IMD Issues Heavy-Rain Alerts for Tamil Nadu, Red Warning for North Bengal as Pakistan Tracks Cyclone Shakti

A stalled monsoon withdrawal plus an Arabian Sea cyclone is prolonging hazardous rainfall into early week across eastern India and Pakistan.

Overview

  • Chennai and several Tamil Nadu districts are forecast to see one or two spells of moderate to heavy rain today with thunderstorms and lightning, and fishermen have been advised to stay ashore due to squally winds and rough seas.
  • The IMD has issued a red warning for sub-Himalayan West Bengal through October 6, citing heavy to extremely heavy rain and heightened risks of landslides, severe waterlogging and rising river levels in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar.
  • Pakistan’s Met Office reports the northeast Arabian Sea system has intensified into Cyclone Shakti and is moving west-northwest, while Punjab’s PDMA warns of heavy rain and possible flooding from Rawalpindi to Lahore from October 5–7.
  • Islamabad and Rawalpindi recorded measurable showers on October 3–4, including 23 mm at Saidpur and 16 mm at Shamsabad, as officials cautioned about urban flooding, landslides in hilly areas and a drop in temperatures.
  • The IMD also flagged strong winds and very rough sea conditions along parts of Maharashtra’s coast linked to Shakti, as a recent Bay of Bengal depression that made landfall near Gopalpur and a delayed monsoon withdrawal keep the wet spell going.
