IMD Issues Cyclone Alert for Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Bay of Bengal System Set to Intensify

Overview

  • IMD identifies a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and expects it to strengthen from September 24.
  • Thunderstorms and localized heavy rain are forecast from September 24 to 28, with 7–11 cm possible on September 25–26.
  • Squally weather with surface winds of 35–45 km/h, gusting to 55 km/h, is likely over the Andaman Sea and along the islands’ coast.
  • Sea conditions are expected to remain rough for five days, and marine advisories remain in effect for small craft and tourists.
  • Port warnings are active and the DSS has begun altering sailings, with the vessel Sindhu skipping Katchal on September 23 and on its September 25 return.
