IMD Forecasts Cold Wave to Persist Across North, Central and East India as Northwest Cools Further

IMD links the temperature slide to clear skies, radiation cooling and cold northwesterly winds, prompting health and farm advisories.

Overview

  • Minimum temperatures in northwest India are projected to fall another 2–3°C over the next few days, with cold to severe cold wave conditions likely in isolated pockets from Haryana and Delhi to Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand and Odisha.
  • Delhi’s Safdarjung station logged 10.4°C, four degrees below normal and the season’s lowest so far, with isolated cold-wave conditions expected through Wednesday though a citywide declaration has not been issued.
  • Madhya Pradesh expanded its alert to 23 districts for the next four days, as several cities fell below 10°C and authorities warned of an early and more intense start to winter.
  • Across Maharashtra, Pune recorded 13.4–13.5°C while Jalgaon dipped to 9.2°C and Dhule hit 8.6°C earlier, with the IMD expecting further drops under prevailing dry conditions.
  • The IMD reported widespread minimums in the 7–10°C range from the western Himalayas to the plains and urged precautions for cold-related illness along with evening, light irrigation to protect standing crops.
