Overview
- Late Friday the India Meteorological Department said an active monsoon spell would continue through July 2 with widespread rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across large parts of the country.
- The IMD warned of isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusts of 40–60 kmph in many states and of thundersqualls up to 70 kmph over parts of Jharkhand and Bihar.
- A yellow alert was issued for Mumbai for June 27–28 for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, and fishing advisories were put in place for rough seas off the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.
- Despite a heavy 24‑hour downpour in late June, rain has been highly patchy in Maharashtra, leaving most districts dry and Pune with an 81.3 mm seasonal deficit compared with normal levels.
- Mumbai’s seven lakes held just 7.5% of capacity, a shortfall that raises the risk of water supply strain even as the forecasted heavy rain increases the chance of urban flooding and transport disruption.
