IMD Forecasts Above-Normal Monsoon Rains and Activates Block-Level Monitoring

The forecast is paired with a real-time block-level network to highlight local rainfall shifts and reservoir storage trends for better planning.

Overview

  • IMD projects August–September rainfall at 106% of the long-period average, with August expected to be near-normal and September above-normal.
  • Below-normal rainfall is likely in northeast and adjoining east India, isolated parts of central India and southwestern peninsular regions.
  • The new Block-Wise Rainfall Monitoring Scheme delivers real-time data for 7,200 administrative blocks, increasing spatial resolution tenfold to aid agriculture, disaster management and policy planning.
  • As of July 31, 161 major reservoirs held 126.48 BCM (69% of capacity), significantly above normal levels though the Brahmaputra basin remains under deficit.
  • ENSO-neutral conditions are set to persist through October with a possible weak La Niña post-monsoon, while August day temperatures trend normal to below and night temperatures normal to above normal.
