IMD Flags Ongoing Cold Wave Across North, Central and East India

IMD expects a brief easing of the chill on the plains with a chance of light snow in higher Kashmir.

Overview

  • Cold wave conditions are forecast in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha through early week, with district-level yellow alerts active in several states.
  • Delhi’s minimum rose to about 8°C on Sunday after 6.8°C a day earlier as a western disturbance set in, yet air quality stayed in the very poor range with AQI readings around 308–334 and only gradual improvement expected.
  • In Kashmir, night temperatures remained below freezing at many sites on Sunday — Pahalgam hit −4.3°C and Srinagar −0.9°C — with light snowfall likely over higher reaches on Monday, according to the Met department.
  • Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana reported single‑digit lows — Fatehpur (Sikar) around 3.5°C and Faridkot 4.4°C — with the Jaipur Met Centre maintaining a cold wave alert and reports of frost over mustard in parts of the state.
  • Central and eastern belts stayed chilly as Madhya Pradesh logged fresh lows near 5–8°C with short‑term cold wave alerts, Chhattisgarh dipped to near 3.9°C in Bastar, Jharkhand’s Gumla was near 3–3.5°C under a yellow alert, and West Bengal turned drier with Kolkata’s season low around 14.5°C.
