IMD Flags Intensifying Winter Through Jan 1: Red Alert in Uttar Pradesh, Fog Alert in Delhi

Authorities brace for prolonged low visibility with severe cold across northern and eastern states.

Overview

  • The IMD issues a red alert for Uttar Pradesh for dense to very dense fog and severe cold day conditions, while Delhi receives a two-day yellow alert for morning fog.
  • Orange alerts cover Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh for dense to very dense fog, with state-specific fog advisories also in force across the northeast and east.
  • Dense fog persists in many parts of Uttar Pradesh till January 1, with varying end-dates elsewhere including Himachal Pradesh till December 31 and several northeastern states through December 31.
  • Cold wave or cold to severe cold day conditions are forecast in pockets of north Rajasthan on December 28, Jharkhand on December 28–29, Bihar from December 27–31, and parts of Uttarakhand and West/East Uttar Pradesh during this period.
  • Snow or rain is expected over the western Himalayan region on December 27 and again from December 29 to January 1, while the Andaman & Nicobar Islands face thunderstorms with gusty winds from December 27–30; Delhi’s air quality slips to the Very Poor category with AQI readings above 300 in parts.
