IMD Flags Intensifying Cold Wave, Dense Fog Across North and East India

Minimum temperatures are forecast to drop by 2–4°C over northwest India in the next 48 hours.

  • The weather office warns of very dense fog across multiple states, with persistence in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh through December 30 and in Uttar Pradesh through December 29.
  • Rajasthan reports some of the lowest readings of the season, with Fatehpur at 1.6°C earlier in the week and Karauli at 3.6°C on Friday, as several districts stay below 5–6°C.
  • Kashmir remains below freezing with Srinagar at −2.2°C and colder conditions in higher reaches such as Sonamarg and Gulmarg.
  • Jharkhand carries a yellow cold wave alert for 12 districts and Bihar faces an orange alert for dense to very dense fog with cold day conditions and visibility risks.
  • Chandigarh logged its first cold day of the season as dense fog disrupted travel, leading to 13 flight cancellations, 35 delays and late-running trains, while single-digit minima extended to parts of Madhya Pradesh and Telangana.
