IMD Flags Heavy Rain in Tamil Nadu Nov. 16–19 as Northeast Monsoon Reignites

Meteorologists link the impending spell to a westward-moving Bay of Bengal circulation.

Overview

  • Yellow alerts are in place for multiple districts, including Chennai, with the city cautioned for Sunday and Monday.
  • Heavy to intense rainfall is forecast across delta and coastal belts, notably Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore and the PuducherryKaraikal area.
  • Fishermen have been told to stay ashore due to rough seas and winds that the IMD says could reach about 55 km/h off Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram.
  • The IMD warns of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in urban areas and urges people to limit travel during heavier spells.
  • Localized downpours have already been logged, including 7 cm at Mandapam and 8 cm at Tiruchendur, with moderate rain likely to persist in parts of the state through November 20 and further advisories expected.
